Sensory-Friendly Community Activities
Inclusive. Accessible
At Building Hope for Autism, we believe everyone deserves to participate fully in the life of their community. That’s why we offer sensory-friendly events throughout the Kansas City area designed with comfort, accessibility, and inclusion in mind. These events are tailored to reduce sensory input like loud noises, bright lights, and overwhelming crowds, creating a safe space for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families to relax, connect, and have fun.

Science City
For 2025, Building Hope for Autism has partnered with Union Station to provide scholarships for schools, nonprofit organizations, and community groups serving sensory-sensitive and underrepresented populations throughout Greater Kansas City. These scholarships help ensure that those who may lack funding can access the unique educational opportunities offered through our Science City STEM programs.
Every other month, Science City hosts Sensory Sunday, special events aimed at providing a more welcoming space for our guests by limiting sound and lighting effects and offering sensory-friendly activities before normal operating hours. Guests are provided with sensory-friendly activities and sensory kits.

Family Free Movie Day
Family Free Movie Day provides an opportunity for families to enjoy a movie together in a supportive and inclusive environment.
The experience is designed to be nonjudgmental and accommodating, allowing individuals of all abilities to feel welcome and comfortable.

Sensory Santa Experience
Our Sensory Santa Experience is a magical, stress-free alternative to the typical mall visit.
Each family enjoys a private, 15-minute session with Santa in a calm, quiet, and sensory-friendly environment tailored specifically for children on the autism spectrum and those with sensory sensitivities.
No crowds. No long lines. No fluorescent lights or overwhelming noise—just a peaceful space where kids can meet Santa at their own pace.

The sensory Santa experience was exactly what we needed. The holiday season is full of rush and change, and is overwhelming for our family. When we went to see sensory Santa, we were able to let our guards down, know we were in a safe place, and just enjoy a bit of the holidays with our kids. It was a rare moment of freedom and control for them, where they were able to do what they wanted at a pace that they felt comfortable. It was warm and welcoming experience for which we are very grateful.
